Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
